Find a Path Forward with EMDR

When past experiences linger, they may manifest in ways like depression, anxiety disorders, persistent stress, emotional overwhelm, or recurring patterns that feel tough to shift. You may feel stuck, unsure of how to move forward, or frustrated that therapy so far hasn’t delivered lasting change.

Through a structured process, EMDR therapy aims to help you work through challenging experiences, potentially reducing their emotional impact. If you’ve found traditional therapy ineffective or want an evidence-based approach that promotes lasting change, EMDR might be the right path for you.

Serving individuals throughout South Australia, our EMDR therapy is also accessible through tailored online psychology services for those unable to attend in person.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that uses bilateral stimulation (in the form of eye movements, sounds, or body tapping) in an effort to activate the brain’s natural healing capacity. Adverse experiences tend to impact our wellbeing and psychological health because of what we believe the event says about us or the world we live in. EMDR aims to enable us to process these past events and arrive at more adaptive conclusions about what those events actually mean about us.
Research in neuroplasticity demonstrates that our brain has the ability to change, create new neural pathways, and produce new neurons. Because the brain has this ability to change, we have the ability to change our way of thinking and potentially improve our mood.
EMDR utilises our brains’ neuroplasticity to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections, which allows the brain to compensate for injury and adjust to new situations.

How May EMDR Help Me?

Designed to address the psychological and physical effects of adverse life experiences, EMDR offers more than trauma support– it may also promote growth in relationships, social interactions, and professional performance. This approach is used for addressing conditions like depression, PTSD, OCD, anxiety, panic, phobias, addiction, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, and grief. It may also help manage symptoms such as hyper-vigilance, intrusive memories, and persistent feelings of guilt, anger, shame or hopelessness.

EMDR may be used for processing single-incident traumatic events, often labelled ‘big T’ trauma (e.g. a major car accident, assault, or natural disaster). It also aims to offer support for ongoing, less overt traumatic experiences, known as ‘little t’ traumas, such as chronic stress from interpersonal conflict, attachment challenges, neglect, or financial pressures. A commonly overlooked aspect of ‘little t’ trauma is its cumulative nature– when these smaller stressors build up, they may overwhelm the nervous system and affect emotional functioning as deeply as a ‘big T’ trauma.

Research increasingly supports EMDR therapy as an approach for addressing emotional trauma, difficult life experiences, negative thoughts and emotions, trauma-related imagery, and physical complaints.

Our EMDR Program

The conventional approach to therapy doesn’t work for everyone.

Psychological therapy typically involves 50-minute sessions scheduled fortnightly or monthly. This approach often requires a lengthy treatment period, and it may take considerable time before noticeable improvement is felt. Progress may also slow when sessions are spent addressing immediate concerns or crises, diverting attention from your primary therapy goals.

That’s why we now offer Bloom EMDR Intensives– an accelerated form of therapy designed to help you stay focused and potentially reach your goals sooner. Our therapeutic programs involve a month of in-depth client preparation to prepare you for therapy, followed by an intensive schedule of two-hour sessions, attended three times per week. Our standard treatment program is equivalent to approximately 11 sessions in a traditional therapy model, which would normally take anywhere from five to 11 months to complete.

Using an intensive approach allows us to navigate the eight phases of EMDR treatment, focusing on the root of the issue. This deliberate process improves efficiency, helping you make more focused progress and potentially achieve better overall well-being.

Bloom Psychology & Yoga Therapy

Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m a clinical psychologist, accredited EMDR therapist, and a certified yoga teacher and yoga therapist. My extensive experience in the field of psychology has been cultivated over 20 years of practice in the field, working across many different settings, clients, and psychological conditions. I am a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and The EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA).

My practice is focused on EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) therapy, after observing the beneficial impact it offered many of my clients. I have also undertaken advanced training in a number of psychological modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness and neuropsychological-based therapies, which I draw on to support the EMDR approach. I now work exclusively with EMDR Intensive therapy (consisting of two-hour sessions scheduled close together), allowing for maximum focus on addressing the core issues behind your mental health concerns, with less distraction from the ups and downs of daily life.

I’m deeply committed to sharing tools, techniques, and concepts that aim to help individuals work through psychological challenges, supporting them in feeling better and finding greater peace in their lives.
