Find a Path Forward with EMDR

The effects of past experiences may show up in many ways in your life, taking the form of depression, anxiety disorders, persistent stress, emotional overwhelm, or patterns that feel difficult to break. You might feel stuck, uncertain about how to move forward, or frustrated that previous attempts at therapy haven’t led to lasting change.

Through a structured process, EMDR therapy aims to help you work through challenging experiences, potentially reducing their emotional impact. If you’ve found traditional therapy ineffective or want an evidence-based approach that promotes lasting change, EMDR might be the right path for you.

Our EMDR therapy supports individuals across South Australia, with flexible online psychology services designed for those who prefer or require remote access.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that uses bilateral stimulation (in the form of eye movements, sounds, or body tapping) in an effort to activate the brain’s natural healing capacity. Adverse experiences tend to impact our wellbeing and psychological health because of what we believe the event says about us or the world we live in. EMDR aims to enable us to process these past events and arrive at more adaptive conclusions about what those events actually mean about us.
Research in neuroplasticity demonstrates that our brain has the ability to change, create new neural pathways, and produce new neurons. Because the brain has this ability to change, we have the ability to change our way of thinking and potentially improve our mood.
EMDR utilises our brains’ neuroplasticity to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections, which allows the brain to compensate for injury and adjust to new situations.

How May EMDR Help Me?

EMDR focuses on alleviating the psychological and physical impacts of challenging life experiences. It’s not limited to trauma; it may also support growth in areas like relationships, social engagement, and work performance. EMDR may be useful in addressing a wide range of psychological conditions, including depression, PTSD, OCD, anxiety, panic, phobias, addiction, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, and grief. It may also help with symptoms such as hyper-vigilance, intrusive memories, and overwhelming feelings of guilt, anger, shame, or hopelessness.

EMDR may help clients process single-incident traumatic events, often known as ‘big T’ trauma (e.g. a major car accident, assault, or natural disaster). It may be equally useful for ongoing, less obvious traumatic experiences, referred to as ‘little t’ traumas, such as chronic stress from interpersonal conflict, attachment issues, neglect, or financial strain. A key aspect of ‘little t’ trauma is its cumulative effect– multiple smaller traumas may build up over time, overwhelming the nervous system and affecting emotional well-being as profoundly as a ‘big T’ trauma.

Research increasingly supports EMDR therapy as an approach for addressing emotional trauma, difficult life experiences, negative thoughts and emotions, trauma-related imagery, and physical complaints.

Our EMDR Program

The traditional model of therapy does not serve everyone.

Psychological therapy typically involves 50-minute sessions scheduled fortnightly or monthly. This approach often requires a lengthy treatment period, and it may take considerable time before noticeable improvement is felt. Progress may also slow when sessions are spent addressing immediate concerns or crises, diverting attention from your primary therapy goals.

That’s why we now offer Bloom EMDR Intensives– a fast-tracked therapy approach designed to help you stay focused and potentially achieve your goals sooner. Our program begins with a month of in-depth client preparation, followed by an intensive schedule of two-hour sessions, held three times per week. This condensed format is equivalent to approximately 11 traditional therapy sessions, which would typically take five to 11 months to complete.

Through this intensive approach, we systematically work through the eight phases of EMDR treatment, targeting the core of the issue. This focused method maximises time and energy, fostering clearer progress and greater well-being.

Bloom Psychology & Yoga Therapy

Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m a clinical psychologist, accredited EMDR therapist, and a certified yoga teacher and yoga therapist. My extensive experience in the field of psychology has been cultivated over 20 years of practice in the field, working across many different settings, clients, and psychological conditions. I am a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and The EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA).

After witnessing the profound benefits EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) therapy brought to many of my clients, I chose to centre my practice around this approach. I’ve also completed advanced training in various psychological modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and neuropsychological-based therapies, which I integrate to support EMDR. I now work exclusively with EMDR Intensive therapy, featuring two-hour sessions scheduled close together, enabling focused attention on core mental health concerns with fewer distractions from daily life.

I’m passionate about providing tools, techniques, and insights to help people navigate psychological challenges and potentially achieve greater peace and well-being in their lives.
